Turkeys

We first started keeping turkeys because we found it difficult to find a whole one to roast for our Christmas dinner (Irish traditional Christmas meal!) but later we started keeping a few more and also raising them for friends.

Turkeys are large birds originally from North America and we have several different colours, Brown, White and Bronze.

Turkey as a Guardian!

Although we grow turkeys for meat they also undertake another important job at the farm! Along with lots of predators that come to try and get a free dinner at the farm we also have snakes that like to eat our chicken eggs!

Chickens are terrified of snakes and so not only do we lose the eggs but the chickens also get spooked and stop laying any more eggs....for the rest of the season!

Luckily turkeys have no fear of snakes! Watch below how this turkey handled a rattlesnake (in America where both species originate)

Guinea Fowls

Guinea fowl are beautiful, funny and active birds that also provide a very tasty meat for the table. It is similar to turkey but more delicate.

We keep guinea fowl mostly for our own use but also provide some birds to top end restaurants. Like the turkeys however, the guinea fowl have a very important job!

Guinea Fowl Alarm!

The guinea fowl we keep also do a great job at keeping away the predators. Not only do they make a huge amount of noise as they raise the alarm but they will also advance on foxes, pine martins and wolves if they are near.
Most predators find this very intimidating and leave without supper! Watch this quick video to hear the noise they make!
